Association welcomes new Health and Safety Regulations

The Petroleum Exploration and Production Association CEO, David Robinson welcomed the release of the Health and Safety in Employment (Petroleum Exploration and Extraction) Regulations 2013.

“As an industry our track record of keeping our workers safe on site is second to none. We have never had a major accident resulting in multiple injuries or fatalities, nor have we had a work related fatality in the oil and gas industry for over 15 years. But that is not a justification for standing still. We always look to improve on the way we operate through better technology, innovation and regulation.

“As responsible operators we want to make sure that our workers are safe on site and at the end of their shifts go home to their families.  These regulations are in line with practices in the UK and Australia and will effectively build on and grow the set of robust regulations New Zealand already has in place.

“New Zealander’s have told us they want to make sure regulations that govern our sector are robust and based on best practice. Our operators already work to international best practice, but these new regulations will give New Zealanders the confidence that all the checks and balances are in place to keep communities, the environment and our workers safe.
